COMMENTS ON LEGION VILLE

Colonel Lewis L. Millet, Ret., United States Army

Received the Medal of Honor for action February 7, 1951,

25th Infantry Regiment, Soam-Ni, Korea

In a letter written to The Eagle Publication by Legion Ville Historical Society member Doug Ward:

"We need your help...The Birthplace of the U.S. Army is now in danger of being turned into a location for a car dealership. Our local and state politicians are unwilling to help us. "Legion Ville" is a 50-acre site where Maj. Gen. "Mad Anthony" Wayne, then Commander-in-Chief of the newly-designated "Legion of the United States", created a disciplined force capable of subduing the Indians on what was then the Northwest frontier. He was acting under a 1792 commission by President George Washington.

Legion Ville is in the National Register of Historic Places. There are 17 graves on the site containing the bodies of American soldiers. We now have the research in hand for making the site a National Park. We, the Legion Ville Historical Society, Inc. are dedicated to the preservation of the entire 50-acre parcel that was once Wayne's encampment. We are trying to have the site condemned so it cannot be destroyed by Narrow-minded commercial developers. We need attention brought to our problem. We have the money to buy it and preserve it if it is condemned and sold at fair a market price. If you are interested in helping this project, contact Doug Ward: The Legion Ville Historical Society, Inc.: Rd #4, #10 Pine Court; Sewickley, PA 15143. Phone (724) 266-1795. In response,Medal of Honor Recipient Col. Lewis L. Millett wrote:

Those graves (at Legion Ville) should be marked by a stone with these words in gold: "Tell the citizens of the United States we lie here obedient to your laws and noble cause of freedom."

A special thanks goes out to Medal of Honor recipient "Col. Lewis L. Millett for his touching words of inspiration. God bless you and may we never turn our backs on our American freedom.
