1. Anne (Penrose) Chaytor - born 11/16/1670, died 8/19/1702It is belived that Robert came to Ireland in 1658 as one of Cromwell's soldiers "planted" on Irish soil. By 1673, Robert and Anna had become members of the Society of Friends as shown in the Wicklow records: "Robert Penrose and Anne, his wife, lived at Ballykean and received Truth early in the breaking forth of it in the County, and some Meetings at first held at their house and was very servicable in their day and died in Unity with Friends and left a good savor behind them". Robert, and/or his brother Richard, was owner of an estate of 360 acres called "Ballykean Penrose", just north of the village of Redcross in the Rathdrum District of County Wicklow, Ireland. There is no evidence to show how this property came into the Penrose family, however, both Robert and Richard, and their families, lived at Ballykean. After the brothers' death, the estate was inherited by Richard's descendants. Robert's only son eventually emmigrated to the United States. In 1837 the property was occupied by a Mrs. Foot and later by a Swiss gentleman, named Ernest Miville, who operated it as a stud farm. There was an older house of the seventeenth century which was then used as a stable, and a larger house of eighteenth or nineteenth century construction. Opposite the main gate was a small building about 30x18 feet in a small garden of about a third acre. The estimated construction of the building is about 1720-1730. It had been converted to two rooms and was used as a storeroom. It is belived that this building was the first Friends Meeting House erected especially for that purpose on lands given by Daniel Penrose, Richard's grandson. On May 26, 1673, Robert was committed to prison for refusing to take an oath and was there ten weeks.

In 1743 and again in 1747, he appeared before the Richland Friends Meeting for irregular conduct (excessive drinking). He was reinstated in the faith on 9/21/1749.

Since St. Clairsville was under the auspices of the Plainfield Friends, it seems likley that this family lived in Belmont County. All of Jesse and Sarah's children, except Robert, were disowned by the Society of Friends for either disunity of marrying outside that faith. Sarah was disowned at Redstone, Pa. March 3, 1815.

The genealogical account of the Penrose family is remarkable in that from one Elizabethan yeoman (landowner), who died in 1572, it has been possible to trace the descendants who were among the early Quaker immigrants to Pennsylvania.
The name, Penrose, is undoubtedly of Cornish origin and we have no explanation of how these people came to be living in the sixteenth century in Wheldrake Parish, Yorkshire, England. About 1658, the family was located near Redcross, County Wicklow, Ireland. It is belived that Robert Penrose (2) was "planted" there as a Crowmwellian soldier. In 1670, the family became members of the Society of Friends (Quakers). Their descendants followed this faith until the early 1800's in America, when marriages outside the faith became common.
The first Penrose family to come to America settled in Philadelphia for a short time in 1717 and eventually moved west to Maiden Creek, Berks Co., Pennsylvania, where they were one of the first pioneer settlers. As with most early settlers, the descendants filtered west as the territory opened up and, in 1813/14 Jesse Penrose located in Ohio. He and his wife are buried near St. Clairsville.
The Penrose family Lineage lists only the direct ancestors of the Klee family.
