DON'T FALL FOR A WRITE-IN CAMPAIGN
Dear Editor,
Recently, there have been several articles in the Times regarding the fly-ash issue in Harmony
Township. The truth to the matter is that the dumping of power plant spew in a residential area
makes no sense at all. Fifty years ago, environmental concerns were not an issue. Now that we as a
nation are more environmentally conscious, we realize that a large amount of industrial waste
products that we once thought harmless are in fact toxic. A good case in point is asbestos, PCB's,
or fly-ash.
Making even less sense is the fact that many residents in Harmony believe that Commissioner Mike
Kuga is the fly-ash messiah who single-handedly prevented the township from being dumped in.
The dedication and hard work of those who formed the HAD-IT. group are the ones to take credit
for creating resistance against the dumping along with the fact that $70,000 of the tax payers money
was used to thwart the proposed project.
After being defeated in the May election, Commissioner Kuga, seized the opportunity of the fly-ash
issue to become a write-in candidate for the November election. Voters should not be blinded or
consumed by this one (and only) commendable action as a commissioner in four long years.
Instead, residents of Harmony Township should take a close look at what this particular
commissioner has not accomplished in the past four years. Residents should also ask if the township
is further ahead as a result of Mr. Kuga's abominable decision making, and what it would be like to
have him as a commissioner for another four years.
As I see it, the incoming township commissioners will be a welcome change. The voters did well to
oust Kuga in May and should not make the mistake of writing him in as a result of his posturing in
the fly-ash issue.
I don't want to see dumping of any such material in Harmony Township, be it the Sacco property or
future dumping areas. The people of Harmony should be given all the credit for halting this project.
As the old saying goes: "The people start the parade and the politicians get in front."
Sincerely,
Herbert J. Sullivan
